Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative- Inspired by Swachh Bharat Mission

Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative (APCCI) is an environmentally sustainable initiative, undertaken by Serum Institute of India and Mr. Adar Poonawalla as a contribution towards social responsibility. His vision was inspired by ‘Swacch Bharat Mission’ launched by our Hon. Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi in 2014. He realized that if India’s image had to be improved a drastic change would be required with good management, local government support and substantial funding. In 2015 he started Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative and has funded in his capacity for this initiative.

Making Cities More Liveable

Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative is an environmentally sustainable initiative, undertaken by Serum Institute of India and Mr. Adar Poonawalla as a contribution towards social responsibility.

Rapidly expanding cities in India are creating visible and sizeable environmental challenges. From a common citizen’s perspective, basic amenities, safety and security, health and hygiene are required to make a city liveable. Waste Collection is one of the major aspects related to these pillars. As easy it may sound, it is in fact challenging for many cities to meet even one of these requirements to the fullest. APCCI’s mission to make Pune a clean city is an effort to tackle such challenges by engaging volunteers and using state-of-the-art technology. The initiative has gained success with the cooperation of citizens, resident welfare associations, NGOs, civic officials etc

Equipments used to drive this Initiative.

The APCCI is deploying state of the art equipment to drive this initiative. These machines are not the conventional one’s used in India to address waste issue. These are state of the art machines specifically designed to do the job effortlessly and within a short span of time.

Long-term Vision

Pune is the first city to adopt the Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative. While this is a first step towards achieving the vision of making cities livable, the initiatives long term goal is to ensure that more and more cities adopt it to make Urban India becomes cleaner, greener and healthier.

Collaboration and Technology at scale to help make Pune cleaner city

The clean city initiative addresses this issue of waste and garbage by deploying state of the art machines as it is done in Western countries, which have over the years evolved to a very sophisticated system of waste management using GPS enabled vehicles and mobile application for reporting the waste by citizen.

Equipment deployed include, Electric Vacuum Street Litter Picker, Electric Auto Tipper, Vacuum Litter Picker Mounted on Vehicles, Vacuum Assisted Truck Mounted Road Sweeper, Auto Tippers which uses the best technology to pick up and clear the waste from the streets. Vehicle mounted pothole filling machine to fill potholes in the shortest possible time. These type of equipment are used for the first time in India.

Today we have over 275 machines and close to 600 employees for managing this activity covering more than 700 kms of roads in Pune (roughly 60% the city) and in part of Mumbai.

Role of APCCI

The APCCI focusses on collection of street waste in Pune and Mumbai. Initiatives undertaken in this direction include:

  • Litter picking from foothpaths.
  • Clearing of chronic waste dumping spots across the city.
  • Installing of litter bins at strategic / high traffic locations across the city.
  • Support vehicles and manpower for clearance of litter from litter bins.
  • Providing drinking water to over 6000 families in fringe villages of Pune city.
  • Information and outreach programs to educate citizens regarding importance of segregation of waste and disposal using waste / litter bins
  • Activation programs in association with local civic bodies in schools, residential societies, market places amongst others.
  • Door-to-door e-waste collection.
  • Pothole filling.
